Children’s Liturgy of the Word

The Children’s Liturgy of the Word Ministry gives school-aged children the opportunity to listen to the Word and pray together during the 9:00 a.m. Spanish Mass and 11:00 a.m. English Mass. For more information, please contact Fritzie & Sandy Cruz (English) (818) 955-8929 and Leticia & Elmar Castillo (818) 841-1774 for Spanish.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word is held Sundays during 9:00 a.m. and the 11:000 a.m. Mass. The children are under supervision by a team of volunteers.

This gathering is a part of celebration of the Mass. It is not a religious education class or a childcare environment. We welcome all school aged children that are old enough to be able to sit quietly for 15 or 20 minutes as an active listener and not be distracting to the leaders or the other children to an age where they might lose interest (usually ages 5 to 11).

Children gather with peers and adult leaders to pray, listen, sing, and discuss readings. Parents are always welcome to attend with their children.

Children appreciate the opportunity to be with their peers and listen to God’s Word with a child focus. Help continue this vital ministry.

Children are called forward with their ministry leader to go to a separate area of the church.  There is an opening prayer, and a child reads from the Old Testament.

Then we sing an Alleluia, listen to a Gospel reading, and have a discussion about the readings. We talk about how the Word of God can be in your life every day of the week. The children are encouraged to share experiences or ideas and ask questions too.

After the discussion, we say prayers of the faithful and the Apostle’s Creed.

Afterward, we return to join the congregation during offertory.

Come and perhaps you will be interested in reading to the group one day.

We also have volunteer opportunities for community members. This may be particularly relevant to students seeking service hours. Volunteers help set up the CLOW room and signal the leader that it’s time for the children to join the congregation during offertory.

We welcome anyone who would like to become a leader, or an assistant. It is a wonderful way to share your faith with God’s most precious gift of all, our children

You don’t need to be a Biblical scholar or professional educator to be a leader. Have you ever told a story? Is there a certain reading that is very meaningful to you? Have you ever explained the reasons behind your values to others? You might be surprised how much your own spirituality is energized when you think about how to share these messages with children.
